Do your kids regularly pick a paintbrush over a soccer ball? While Fishers is known for its youth sports, many children also enjoy expressing themselves through the arts.
While there are many classes and workshops available in Hamilton County, there also are ways you can encourage creativity at home. Here are a few tips from the Fishers Arts Council.
Create a creativity zone in your home
Art can get messy in a hurry. Designate a portion of your basement, a spare room or the garage for art projects. Not enough space? Then buy an art mat or use an old quilt to protect your home from your young artistic endeavors.
Recycled materials make great art
If your budding artist is ready to go beyond crayons and paint sets, consider recycling other items for their artistic expression. Popsicle sticks, scrap paper and fabric, sequins and old buttons, broken flower pot pieces, newspaper, plastic bags, even washed Capri Sun juice bags can be recycled into art.
Consider art projects for car rides
Help your kids express themselves, even on long trips. Keep a skein of yarn in the car for finger knitting or yarn games. Create a rainbow scavenger hunt to encourage little ones to look out the window to find their colors.
Don’t forget other art forms
Not everyone expresses him or herself through visual art. Host a storytelling night to encourage kids to write and act out their own stories and poetry. Stage your own Family Idol to let your kids take turns singing and dancing to their favorite songs.
