Artist of the Month (August 2009) – Rita Wrighton

Artist of the Month (August 2009) – Rita Wrighton
Art Specialty: Stained Glass

If you’ve admired the many stained glass windows in Fishers area schools, chances are Rita Wrighton helped create them. An accomplished stain glass artist, Rita has worked as an Artist in Residence in over 20 Indiana and Wisconsin elementary schools. The council is pleased to introduce Rita Wrighton as our featured Artist of the Month.

YES, young children can work with glass!” exclaimed Rita. In just one to three weeks, students design, cut, foil and solder stained glass art pieces that can be enjoyed in the schools forever.

View Rita’s Work:

Locally, Rita’s work can be seen at Brooks School, Cumberland Road, Durban, Fall Creek, Fishers, Geist, Lantern Road, New Britton, and Sand Creek elementary schools; as well as Fall Creek and Sand Creek Intermediate Schools.

In addition to elementary school art residencies, Rita has also taught high school and junior high art, adult and senior workshops in stained glass and worked with many Boy Scout and Girl Scout troops.

About Rita Wrighton:

Originally from Wisconsin, Rita lives on Geist Reservoir and incorporates scenes from nature into most of her work. Blue herons, dragonflies, flowers and frogs make frequent appearances.

I work from my home studio on individual custom orders, she said. I also create spontaneous pieces to sell in shops and to use as gifts.

Project Interests:

Some of Rita’s favorite things to make are stepping stones, frames, lamps and light fixtures, small boxes, and custom windows for homes. She also enjoys working on special projects and was commissioned by a hospital to create eight door-sized organic designs consisting of glass, copper, and polished granite.

Every client has a unique design request that we then consult on and create into a beautiful work of art, said Rita. It’s not just another window covering.

Artist of the Month Registration:

The Fishers Arts Council (FAC) will feature a different Artist on its website each month. Local actors, dancers, musicians, painters, writers and ceramic/glass/metal/textile artists are encouraged to apply online.
